Report to friends
1971

It has been a busy year since my last duplicated letter went out to all of you. Many have visited me and some of you I have visited. And so much has taken place and so many projects are on the horizon that it will be difficult to cover everything.

I am still in Paris, where I plan to remain. At least to keep a base here. Big cities agree with me. I don't mean large shopping centers like Los Angeles, but organic walking-about cities, pulsating with energy, people, ideas. And for me Paris is surely this. So if I can keep the bulldozers of so-called progress away from my from door, (yes, this is a very real problem), then my small one room studio will continue to house me and all who pass this way. So come.

Last February attended a media conference (entitled "DOOM 0F THE BOOK ?") in Zürich. John Cartwright organized on behalf of the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute. A good time, a good rest, stimulating, and an opportunity to meet many people and to get to know Zürich.

After the Conference, Abraham Melzer invited me to drive back to Frankfurt/Main with him. (He picked up two hitch-hikers on the way, and treated us all to a delightful lunch.) After several days visiting, it seemed time to train to Copenhagen and Stockholm. I wanted to visit friends in both cities. So early one morning we drove to the Central Station, discovered we were early, ordered hot chocolates and continued our dialogue. When I asked him if he had seen THE ILLUSTRATED PRESIDENTIAL REPORT ON OBSCENITY AND PORNOGRAPHY, he replied that he had seen the copy that had been sent to Brummbar and Didi. Three days later I was in San Diego. (We returned to Abraham's office, telephoned Earl Kemp who created the illustrated edition, and it was concluded that I fly over with the contract.)

Telegrammed Willem de Ridder from Paris. And after the usual going over in a small room ; yes, I too am in the 'book', Willem delivered me to Ai Jolson's former mansion in Beverly Hills. Now a macrobiotic center. Then down to San Diego to complete the contract with Earl Kemp, where we stayed with his family, and journeyed down to Mexico for a quick trip. Flew up to San Francisco to visit the Sexual Freedom League people, plus Kathy & Robert Crumb, Rona Eliott, Ed McClannahan, Gretchen Horton, etc. and to see THE COCKETTES. San Francisco is a great city.

On to Houston for a short visit with my mother and father... Then to New York City.

In New York, dinner with one of my first loves : Jane Alexander. We attended Edinburgh University together way back in 1959/60. She has been responsible for much of the direction of my evolution. She is beautiful in every sense of the word. See THE GREAT WHITE HOPE, and you will know a bit of what I mean... Visited also Jane Stevens' family. Her father, Herbert, let me read some student autobiographies he had commissioned. Later in Paris, I asked my students to write their life stories. Fantastic results. I hope to publish them in 1972... Met Betty Dodson in Fred Jordan's EVERGREEN REVIEW office. Everyone should read her interview in the February 1971 issue of EVERGREEN. My last night in New York was spent with Batty, a friend of her's called Howard, and beautiful Jeanne Pasle-Green in Betty's large bed. (See SUCK 6 for details). My lawyer and friend, John Flatteau, deposited me at Kennedy Airport.

Most of this year has been spent in traveling. To Edinburgh for Tam MacPhail's opening at Ricky Demarco's Gallery. To Wales for the shooting of Jack Bond's film, with script by Jane Arden, and with her company THE HOLOCAUST. I was to have had a small part, but it was lost somewhere in the shooting. But I am in the grand finale party scene some where... To London to stay with my little 'sister', Jean Juliet Buck, and to plan a film about sexual freedom with Jens Jorgen Thorsen, and to see a film called NAUGHTY by Stan Long about SUCK and THE FIRST WET DREAM FILM FESTIVAL… To the East of Franco to visit one of my 'folk-heros' Garry Davis and to collect a new WORLD SERVICE passport. Garry and his fantastic wife, Esther Peter, are superb. Needless to say, I think that everyone should have one of the world passports. Write him in care of WORLD SERVICE AUTHORITY, Schillerstrasse 10, Basel, Switzerland for details on how you can get one as well... To Switzerland for details on how you can get one as well... To Switzerland to spend one delightful day with Tim and Rosemary Leary... To Italy to spend some time with Germaine Greer.

To Cannes twice. Once with Jack Moore to attend a Video Conference. A man nearly paralyzed the Conference by announcing that Cable Television would be able to handle 72 channels very soon. Later "to cover" the Cannes Film Festival. Best movie for me was Dusan Makavejev's "WR-MYSTERIES 0F THE ORGANISM", which I am pleased to report is running in London and New York now. All of you, please see it, and take ten friends with you. Cannes was also a crazy people event.

Of course I always return to Paris, and the University, where I attempt to stimulate my students. I don't believe anyone can teach anyone anything. One can only stimulate. Ultimately one in one's own teacher. Experience is the best way. Travel is the purest form of education. Or to quote from Ivan Illich's important "DE-SCHOOLING SOCIETY": "The pupil is 'schooled' to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new. His imagination is 'schooled' to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work. Health, learning, dignity, independence, and creative endeavor are defined as little more than the performance of the institutions which claim to serve these ends, and their improvement is made to depend on allocating more resources to the management of hospitals, schools, and other agencies in question." May I ask all of you to please read "DE-SCHOLLING SOCIETY" which for me in one of the most important books of our time. May I also, while I am at it, recommend Wilhem Reich's THE MASS PSYCHOLOGY OF FACISM, McLuhan's UNDERSTANDING MEDIA, and Germaine's THE FEMALE EUNUCH… 0K, re-read them!

Visited Copenhagen. Jens Jorgen Thorsen introduced me to Wilhelm Freddie, one of the great painters and characters of that city. Most people don't know, but it was Wilhelm Freddie's long trial, which he won, which was largely responsible for getting rid of' censorship in Denmark.

Attended the Frankfurt Book Fair for the fourth time, and enjoyed myself as much as always. Peddled SUCK once again.

Another WET DREAM FILM FESTIVAL in Amsterdam, attended by some 500 beautiful individuals. Better then ever as far as I was concerned. Produced by Hill Levy, Susan Janssen, Willem de Ridder, Jack Moore, Lynne Tillman, and myself, plus lots and lots of volunteer labor. Bill is putting together a book about the event, and it can be ordered thru SUCK, Postbus 2080, Amsterdam, Holland. Next year we plan to have another WET DREAM to be held on a boat in the Mediterranean. So don't miss it!

Jack Moore, Alexandros Lykourezos, and I are in the process of launching a new medium, THE CASSETTE GAZETTE, the world's first (more or less) audio "magazine". We need Founder Subscribers to help make it happen. A lot of people think I am talking about a video cassette, but no, this in audio magnetic cassette tape. You can help make this happen, so see the enclosed leaflet for details. And please tell people about it...

If any of you would like to play host and time to any of my students, please let me know.

That is more or less all of my news. I am still attempting to write for a number of so-called underground newspapers and magazines, including SUCK, ALOHA, OZ, GERMANIA, NOLA EXPRESS, SCREW, and ACTUEL. A book to help further the sexual liberation for GROVE PRESS is UNDERWAY. I have been commissioned by a French publisher to do a book, so... Also hope to make an 'action' book with the autobiographies. By action I mean that any one who reads the book who would like to correspond with the people included will be given a postbox number somewhere and we will see that all letters are forwarded. Also an working on a 'major philosophical work' (Ho Ho) to be entitled IN A STRANGE KIND 0F WAY, EVERY ONE IS RIGHT ... And letters. 0f course letters.

Now let me hear your news.
- Love and regards
