Rags and Jewels
by Sarah Bean

"Seven stories. Yet not stories in the conventional sense. These are autobiographical bits from the life of an extraordinary young woman. I highly recommend her to you."

Jim Haynes

"If Jim Haynes' new Handshake Editions were to publish nothing else besides this collection of short stories by Sarah Bean, I would already be grateful, As I've mentioned in the Small Press Review and elsewhere, we have arrived at the peculiar juncture where an entire generation of American writers has been born, raised and buried in the University. Their prose - - autobiographical or not - - contains very little that is original or vital. So when we encounter the voice of someone who has travelled far from the University (if she ever set foot there in the first place), one gives a huge sigh of relief, "finally!". …... Though these stories feel like autobiography there is a selection of detail, a reticence almost, which is purely fictional. One puts down this short collection with an appetite for more."
